P1 AquaX

AquaX is the fastest growing personal watercraft championship in the world. Its rapid growth is owed to a simple, yet challenging race format that appeals to today’s personal watercraft users.

This year the program will include the unveiling of a professional level race series and expansion of two further championships in the Great Lakes region of the USA and in Southeast Asia.

Chris MacClugage laid down his challenge for the 2016 P1 AquaX Pro Enduro title with three impressive wins as the US series reached round four at Lake Worth.

The veteran of personal watercraft racing and winner of over 20 world titles, came into the weekend knowing he couldn’t afford any slip ups after amassing four DNFs throughout the opening three rounds in Daytona, Sarasota and Chicago.

MacClugage’s hopes of winning the Pro Enduro title in his first season were helped as current championship leader Aero Aswar endured a torrid weekend to land just 34 points, a new season low for the Indonesian star.

Former world number one Eric Francis was at the heart of the action at his home race after colliding with Aswar in the opening race of the weekend, an incident that caused both riders to be reprimanded (watch the incident below).

Francis ran down MacClugage in race two, only to come off his ski on the last lap, which saw him drop to 5th, and the ‘Eagle’ eventually claimed second for the weekend. World number one Mike Klippenstein put in a solid weekend of racing to finish third on the podium.

The inaugural AM International Cup got underway as several British riders made their way across the pond to challenge the finest United States amateur riders on the tour, including 300 class champion Chris Saxon, 250 champion Tommy Olswang and 200 champion Daniel Steele.

It was a colossal battle between Joe Harvey, runner-up in the 2016 P1 AquaX UK Enduro Championship behind Phil Pope, and Saxon with the American coming out on top by a single point. Harvey suffered mechanical issues in race three to finish just fourth having won race two. Saxon recorded two wins from three to take a lead into the second and final round in Fort Lauderdale.

Elsewhere, Jason Lester landed the 250 spoils, Jennifer Nolan clinched top spot in the 200 class, Argentine Franco Tobler recorded three straight wins to announce himself on the Pro Sprint championship, Sam Nehme topped the Sport class, Eric J Gabryel was unbeaten in the Spark class and young Haden Skellett took victory in the Junior Ski class.

The final series of the US season comes to a fascinating climax in Fort Lauderdale on 19-20 November.
